A New Poem: “Hubris Dismantled”
HUBRIS DISMANTLED [Draft April 17, 2021]
Late as it is in the course of my life,
as my hopes and despairs have become attenuated
to a background murmur of constant noise,
and as the cold vacuous realization
of existence’s abject indifference
to any condition of my life,
becomes inescapably obvious to me,
I reach the realization that all the ills and sins against me,
perpetuated by existence,
are nothing but a random indifferent assortment of circumstances.
With these realizations of life’s vexations,
perpetuated with neither ambition nor malice,
I see it all now as simple indifference
to the actuality in which we live.
I am no more than a monkey,
shaking my fist at the rain;
the exertions of my passionate protests only prevent me
from seeking shelter from the storm.
